2 Dead, 40 Houses Burnt In Edo State Communal Clashes

Tragedy struck in the Akoko Edo Local Government Area of Edo State as two people were killed with over 40 houses burnt over a clash occasioned by mango.


According to reports, Uneme-Ekpedo and Bekuma-Okpameri clashed after some members quarreled over mango.


It was further that four persons from Uneme-Ekpedo community went to a bush to pluck mangoes but had one of them killed by youths from Bekuma-Okpameri community who claimed the mango tree belonged to them.

The killing got youths from Uneme-Ekpedo angry, as they  allegedly mobilized and attacked Bekuma-Okpameri, attacking residents and setting houses ablaze.

According to reports, the palace of the traditional ruler of Bekuma-Okpameri, HRH Moses Alabi, was also set ablaze while injured persons are said to be receiving treatment at an emergency camp at Lampese, a neighboring community.

Confirming the incident, a source said: “As I am talking to you, there is nobody in Bekuma-Okpameri. It was unbelievable. The youths have completely sacked the community and residents are now camped in Lampese.”

However, the Edo State Commissioner of Police, Chris Ezike, while confirming the incident, said  a fact finding police team has been sent to the community to arrest the perpetrators. He also added that the police has held talks with the traditional rulers of the two communities.
