Police hold a man in Coventry city centre today after reports he was waving a samurai sword

Witnesses said the man attempted to cut himself with the weapon before police and paramedics moved in.
Photos from the scene show the man in white trousers and no shirt being held on the ground by police, before his hands are cuffed behind his back.

One of the photos shows what appears to be the sword laying a few feet away.

Chris Kelly told The Coventry Telegraph: 'There were about five to six police officers tending to this guy on the ground.

'We thought he was being restrained at first but then saw pools of blood.

'Apparently he was waving a sword and cutting himself with it, may have even stabbed himself, sort of Harikari (ritual suicide with a sword).
'Police tackled him and disarmed him then gave him first aid.'

The man was reportedly taken to hospital after the incident in Broadgate area of the Warwickshire city

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: 'We were called just before 12.05pm.

'One ambulance attended and treated a male patient and he was taken to University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire.'
