Every season, ABC creates one man or woman who is easy to hate. This time around it’s Chad Johnson, the 28-year-old luxury real estate agent and former Marine who pretty much rubs everyone wrong on this season of The Bachelorette the wrong way. So, is he that bad. Well, I’m going to play devil’s advocate.
Let me start off with a response to the angry tweets I can already see coming: no, being violent is never okay and no, getting in someone’s face is not a reaction that I agree with. Alright, now that that’s out of the way, let’s get into the main scene that made the men stand up to Chad.
During the group date, Chad and the guys — James Taylor, Christian, Alex, Jordan, and Nick B. — all had to fake propose to JoJo to show how much they cared about her. While most of them said a poem or some other sweet nothing about everything they loved about her, Chad chose to just flat out propose. She was caught off guard and asked him, “What were all the things you love about me?”
His defense was that in that moment, if he were proposing, she would already know. When she told him she needed to hear it, he said she was “starting off a little naggy.” Was that the nicest? Probably not. But is he right? Probably.
“If you’re going to ask you to tell you all the things I love about you, I don’t know yet,” he told JoJo in the “press conference” part of the episode. “These guys can all tell you all the different things that they love about you and they’ve studied about you on TV or whatever, but I don’t know. I know you’re beautiful and you’re ready for a relationship.”
That is a good point — it’s week two. These men know very little about the person JoJo is, so by him saying that honestly he doesn’t know yet what he actually loves about her, in a way, is a compliment. Right?
Again, I can say — I don’t agree with him being violent with the guys, which we see in the preview for next week’s two-night special. I also don’t agree with him interrupting the men constantly to get more one-on-one time. However, he’s not a guys’ guy, clearly, and not everyone is the kind of person who wants to sing with strangers about someone they barely even know. So maybe we shouldn’t judge on that.
