BREAKING NEWS: Rollercoaster passengers are trapped 45ft in the air for 40 minutes after ride breaks down just one week after opening

Passengers were left hanging 45ft high in the air for 40 minutes today after a brand new rollercoaster broke down at a busy theme park just over a week after it was officially opened.

Around 15 passengers were stuck for 40 minutes near the top of the new Velociraptor ride at Paultons Park near Romsey, Hampshire, after witnesses described hearing a 'hissing sound'.

The 65ft-tall ride is part of the park's new £9million dinosaur-themed attraction which was opened just nine days ago.
Eyewitnesses described seeing the cart go up the track of the 'boomerang rollercoaster' as normal but come to a stop when a 'hissing noise' was heard.

Staff rescued the passengers by putting them in safety harnesses and walking them down.
One visitor who spotted the incident said: 'The carriages went to the top of the ride as normal but there was a hissing sound and the brakes locked on.
'Staff went up there to reassure the passengers, then started bringing them down after issuing them with safety harnesses that were attached to the guide rail.

'Most people stayed calm. I was near them when they came down and they were fine about it.'

One witness said teenage boys at the front of the cart were shouting that they 'wanted to get down.'

She said: 'I was watching it at the time - suddenly it just stopped and wasn't moving at all.

'They put it down to a technical issue but people were shouting down, saying they wanted to get off.
'There were two boys aged about 15-16 at the front saying "I want to get down".'
Rob Griffiths, Paultons Park, said: 'We can confirm that after 11am this morning we had to carry out a well-practised manual evacuation of the Velociraptor ride.

'Our first priority was to ensure all riders were safely removed from the ride and we are now looking into the cause. All other rides at the park are open as normal.'
A spokeswoman for the park added: 'The ride was fully evacuated after 40 minutes and the height was approximately 14 metres (45ft).'

Paultons Family Theme Park, located in the village of Ower, near Romsey, boasts 70 rides and attractions and is the home of Peppa Pig World.

Last week, the park opened Lost Kingdom - a dinosaur theme park land suitable for children aged between six and 12.
The 'land' cost £9million to build and is home to eight new rides and attractions including the stricken Velocirpator.

Other rides include the Flight of Pterosaur, Temple Heights Zamperla magic carpet; Dino Chase, Boulder Dash, Meteallbau Emmeln track ride, Alive - a dinosaur meet and greet character experience - and the Little Explorers playground.
