Malia Obama’s Going To Harvard Just Like Her Parents — But There’s A Catch

Congratulations to Malia Obama! The smart, accomplished first daughter has been accepted to Harvard University, just like her parents before her. But Malia may have a different plan in mind for college!

Malia Obama, 17, has finally revealed where she’s going to college: Harvard! After a lengthy, high-profile college selection process, the White House released in a statement on May 1 that Malia has been accepted to Harvard University’s class of 2017! Wait — 2017? Isn’t there a year missing here?

“The President and Mrs. Obama announced today that their daughter Malia will attend Harvard University in the fall of 2017 as a member of the Class of 2021. Malia will take a gap year before beginning school,” the White House said in a statement. Go Malia! This smart cookie is making some wise decisions about her future, and we’re sure that her parents are so proud!

For those unfamiliar with the concept, a “gap year” is an option that many students choose to take before going to college, or even during their studies; by deferring her enrollment until Fall 2017, Malia gets to have a year to herself to do whatever she thinks is necessary for herself and her education: get work experience, travel the world, even just get some time to herself after spending eight years growing up in the public eye! With this gap year, Malia won’t have to go to her freshman orientation while her father is still the president. Smart!

President Obama and Michelle Obama both attended Harvard Law School, and now Malia will follow in their (very impressive) footsteps. The children of many presidents have attended Harvard, so Malia will join a very prestigious club. John Quincy Adams and his son, John Adams II; Abraham Lincoln’s son Robert; the sons of FDR and Theodore Roosevelt; John F. Kennedy‘s daughter Caroline; and George W. Bush, who went to Harvard Business School.

We can’t wait to see what this amazing young woman does next, because there’s no limit to what she can accomplish! Malia’s shown an interest in filmmaking before, and even had an internship on the set of Girls! Can you say film major?

Are you surprised that Malia is taking a gap year before college? Tell us in the comments!
