Manhattanhenge 2016: What Time Is It & How To See It

There are many unique things that belong to NYC like the Empire State Building or the NY cheesecake, but another phenomenon is Manhattanhenge! But what time is it and how can you see it? Let us tell you what you need to know!

NYC really is the greatest city in the world! It’s home to the Yankees, has the best theaters and it also has Manhattanhenge — which happens every summer when tourists and locals are treated to the rare sight of the sun lining up with Manhattan’s east-west grid! But what time is it and what’s the best to see it? Find out from us right here!

What time is Manhattanhenge?

It’s a two-day event that continues on Memorial Day, which is an extra special treat, with the sun set to align at 8:12 p.m. If you miss it, don’t worry because it’s due to happen again on July 11 and 12.

Where’s the best place to see it?

For the best view, we suggest heading to the following cross streets 14th, 23rd, 34th, 42nd and 57th. From there you will see everything you need to.

How did it get its name?

Manhattanhenge was first coined by scientist Neill deGrasse Tyson. He adapted the name from Stonehenge in the UK and their summer solstice, giving it a NY flavor.

What’s the difference in the two days of Manhattanhenge?

Well, that’s simple. On the first day the first sunset will be a half sun. However, day two brings a full sun, which is an incredible view.

Manhattanhenge isn’t just exclusive to NY!

That’s right, there’s a Bostonhenge, Chicagohenge and Montrealhenge with all those major cities being on east-west grids.

Folks, will you be looking out for Manhattanhenge this year? Tell us what you will be doing to mark the occasion below!
