Woman Pleads Guilty to Murdering New Mother So She Could Steal Her Infant

A Tennessee woman who admitted to gunning down a mother because she wanted the woman’s newborn has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Catherine Goins, 39, pleaded guilty to murder, aggravated assault, armed robbery and kidnapping in a deal with prosecutors to avoid the death penalty.

She lured young mom Natalia Roberts to the Georgia home of her ex-boyfriend by placing a Craigslist ad offering baby clothes, authorities said.

The mother brought her 3-week old baby and her 3-year-old daughter. As Goins directed her down a steep set of steps to where the baby outfits allegedly were, Goins shot her in the back of the head, sending her tumbling down the stairs, prosecutors said, according to The Chattanoogan.

She then took the 30-year-old woman's children and drove around in the victim's car. She eventually returned with the children and tried to clean up the crime scene, police said.

Goins initially told detectives she shot Roberts in self-defense, as the woman was burglarizing the house.

Investigators soon learned that Goins was obsessed with having a child and had once worn a prosthetic device to simulate being pregnant while she “trolled” the Internet for new mothers with a baby she could steal, authorities said.
