Our hearts were broken on June 19 when Anton Yelchin died aged just 27 in a freak car accident. His death was mourned by celebrities, including his co-stars and his loyal fans as the tributes came flying in. But the death of the ‘Star Trek’ actor was an unknown mystery until now. What exactly did kill Anton and how did he succumb to such a tragic fate? Click down for all the details.

Anton was killed when his vehicle pinned him against a brick mailbox by his own vehicle in a bizarre incident, police confirmed. TMZ reported that Anton’s friends became concerned when he didn’t show up to a rehearsal. They went to his San Fernando Valley home at around 1a.m.., where they found his body trapped between his mailbox, which is attached to his security gate, and car.

The 27-year-old’s cause of death has been confirmed as an “accident caused by blunt traumatic asphyxia.” Police say he did not properly put his car in park, and are calling the tragic situation “just one of those freak accidents.” So sad.

At the time, cops told TMZ that Anton’s vehicle was still running, and in neutral, when they found his body. They said that it appears the car rolled down down the hill, with the actor’s driveway being steep. It’s unknown why Anton got out of the car, but foul play wasn’t suspected.

Anton is best remembered for starring in Alpha Dog opposite Emile Hirsch and Justin Timberlake, as well as the new Star Trek movies in which he played the iconic role of ‘Chekov.’
His loss left a massive hole in Hollywood, with names like Anna Kendrick, John Cho and Miles Teller all paying their tributes to the late actor the moment news broke.
