Donald Trump, 69, spoke out regarding the Orlando massacre at Pulse, a gay club in Orlando, which occurred early Sunday morning, June 12. A lone gunman, Omar Mateen, entered the club, opened fire and took hostages, killing 50 and injuring 53 before he was shot and killed by Orlando police. The horrific incident is the worst mass shooting in US history and the worst terror attack on US soil since September 11, 2001.
Donald Trump, an advocate of the National Rifle Association, took to Twitter to speak out regarding the national tragedy. “Horrific incident in FL. Praying for all the victims & their families. When will this stop? When will we get tough, smart & vigilant?”
While on the campaign trail Trump has been very vocal regarding his stance on gun control and received the NRA’s presidential endorsement. “We love the Second Amendment, folks. Nobody loves it more than us, so just remember that,” he told supporters after his victory at the Nevada caucuses in February.
John Mina, Orlando Police Chief, briefed the public on the shooting during a press conference on June 12. “It appears he was organized and well-prepared,” he said. “The shooter had an assault-type weapon, a handgun and “some type of (other) device on him.”
The White House released an official statement, saying: “The President was briefed this morning by Lisa Monaco, Assistant to the President for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism, on the tragic shooting in Orlando, Florida. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of the victims. The President asked to receive regular updates as the FBI, and other federal officials, work with the Orlando Police to gather more information, and directed that the federal government provide any assistance necessary to pursue the investigation and support the community.”
The horrific shooting brings gun legislation and national security to the forefront of the upcoming election.
