Orlando police have identified the gunman who massacred 50 partygoers and injured 53 more at Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida on June 12 as Omar Mateen, 29. The FBI suspects that Omar, of St. Lucie, Florida, may have committed the crime as an act of radical Islamic terrorism, and is responsibly for the worst mass shooting in US history. “There are allegations [Omar] made threats in the past to having ties to terrorist organizations,” FBI Special Agent In Charge Ron Harper said in a press conference at 7:00am ET. “At this time we’re looking at all angles right now. We do have suggestions that that individual may have leanings toward [radical Islam], that particular ideology. But right now we can’t say definitively so we’re still running everything around.”
The massacre at Pulse nightclub is now the worst mass shooting in United States history; if ruled a terrorist attack, it will be the worst act of terrorism on US soil since September 11, 2001. After a shootout with police outside Pulse, Omar reportedly rushed into the gay club and took the 320 patrons hostage, going on a shooting rampage. He murdered 50 individuals and gravely injured 53 more before police burst into the club, and shot and killed him.
Orlando police chief John Mina said that Omar possessed an assault-style weapon, a handgun, and had “some type of (other) device” on him. Florida law enforcement and the FBI are now trying to determine if his vicious attack was an act of domestic or international terrorism, and if his actions had roots in radical Islam or homophobia.
