There was another reptile involved in the deadly alligator attack that killed 2-year-old Lane Graves in Orlando at a Disney World resort on June 16. Lane’s father, Matt Graves, had already admitted that he did everything he could to free his little boy from the jaws of the gator, but what wasn’t revealed until now was the fact that another alligator was attacking him at the same time. So terrifying.
Matt suffered some pretty gruesome injuries himself trying to save Lane, according to an email sent by Reedy Creek Fire Department Captain Tom Wellons obtained by the Orlando Sentinel. Although it’s unclear exactly how bad Matt’s injuries were, Tom said that they were bad enough for him to need medical attention at a nearby hospital. He needed stitches and antibiotics because of the injuries he endured.
Even though he was clearly hurt from the traumatizing attack that took Lane’s life, Matt refused to leave the spot where Lane disappeared, Tom wrote in his email. Tom didn’t elaborate on how long after the attack Matt finally left the spot to get proper care, but we can only imagine how heartbreaking it was for Matt to leave without knowing if his son’s body would ever be found.
Lane was playing on the shoreline of a pond outside of Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and Spa when an alligator came up and snatched him. Matt told authorities that he immediately jumped in the water in attempt to save his son, but Lane slipped from his grips. After hours of searching, search crew members found Lane’s body, intact, near the area where the attack occurred.
Despite going through such a horrific tragedy, Matt and his wife Melissa Graves started the Lane Thomas Foundation in his honor. We commend them for their strength, especially after losing their son in such a devastating and traumatizing way.
