Sarah McBride Makes History As 1st Transgender To Speak At Major Party Convention: Watch

Hillary Clinton wasn’t the only one to make history at this year’s DNC. By taking the podium at the convention on July 28, Sarah McBride became the first transgender person to speak at a major party convention — and it was beyond powerful. Watch here!

Sarah McBride, 25, came out as transgender four years ago, when she was serving as student body president in college. Since then, she has been an avid LGBT activist, and she currently works for the Human Rights Campaign, where she serves as the National Press Secretary.

With so many accomplishments under her belt, Sarah was the perfect person to speak in support of Hillary Clinton, 68, on night four of the Democratic National Convention. She took the stage to send a powerful message to the crowd, and you can watch it above.

“Despite our progress, so much work remains,” the 25-year-old said. “Will we be a nation where there’s only one way to love, only one way to look and only one way to live? Or will we be a nation where everybody has the freedom to live openly and equally, a nation that’s stronger together? That is the question in this election.”

Sarah went on to talk about her husband, a transgender man who died at just 28 years old after a battle with terminal cancer, and explained that his willingness to fight for the LGBT community until his very last day is what keeps her motivated.

“Hillary Clinton understands the urgency of our fight,” she continued. “She’ll work with us to pass the equality act, to combat violence against transgender women of color and to end the HIV and AIDS epidemic once and for all. Today, in America, LGBTQ people are still targeted by hate that lives in both laws and in hearts. Many still struggle just to get by.

But I believe that tomorrow will be different. Tomorrow, we can be respected and protected, especially if Hillary Clinton is our President, and that is why I am proud to stand here and say that I’m with Her!”
