Shonda Rhimes, 46, isn’t even giving a petition demanding that ABC fire Jesse Williams, 34, from Grey’s Anatomy, the time of day. Some people are livid over the speech Jesse gave at the 2016 BET awards, calling him “racist” for speaking passionately about Black Lives Matter. Too bad the petition doesn’t matter, since “Shondaland Rules!”
A woman named Erin Smith started a change.org petition to be delivered to ABC, demanding that Jesse be held accountable for what she’s calling his “racist” speech. “If this was a white person making the same speech about an African American, they would have been fired and globally chastised, as they should be, but there has been no consequences to Williams’ actions,” Erin wrote.
Jesse was onstage at the BET awards accepting the prestigious Humanitarian award for his extensive social justice work, and all that he does to promote and support Black Lives Matter. It was a passionate, powerful speech, but apparently to some people, trying to uplift black people is instantly equated with tearing down white people.
Yeah, Shonda doesn’t care about any petition; Jesse’s staying put! One of the most egregious part of the petitions was that the woman equated his speech with actor Isaiah Washington being fired from Grey’s in 2007. Isaiah played Dr. Preston Burke, one of the most central characters on the show, but he was written out and fired from the show after calling co-star T.R. Knight (George O’Malley) a homophobic slur. Shonda has a strong track record of protecting her employees, and doing what’s right; if she thought Jesse did something to warrant being fired, she would have already done it!
