ABC Boss Reveals ‘Star Wars’ TV Series News, Confronts ‘Bachelor’ Diversity Issue & More

ABC’s done comic books, they’ve done muppets. So will the next step be ‘Star Wars?’ Well, it’s a definite possibility, but it sounds like it’s in a land far far far away. Plus, the new ABC President of Entertainment also gave much-needed answers on ‘Castle,’ ‘The Bachelor,’ and more.

“Ohh, as a fan, I would absolutely love to say ‘yes,’” President of ABC Entertainment, Channing Dungey said on Aug. 5 at the Summer Press Tour in Beverly Hills. “We have had conversations with them and will continue to have conversations with [Lucasfilm]. I think it would be wonderful if we could find a way to extend that brand into our programming.”

Of course the question was asked because ABC’s parent company is in fact, Disney, who bought the Star Wars franchise from George Lucas. But would it work? Well, that’s still up to debate.
That was just one highlight from the panel with the new ABC Entertainment president, who actually revealed she was quite nervous for her first TCA. One of the tough questions came early: why ax Stana Katic from Castle when you were just going to pull the plug?

“That’s a case where you have things running on two parallel tracks,” she told reporters. “We were always upfront with the studio and producers that we might not be bringing the show back for Season 9. [The studio/producers] did what they had to do [in case there was another season]. Ultimately, we did not feel like it was the right thing to do to order another season.”

Another show that came up? The Bachelor and its lack of diversity. She explained that what needs to happen is the casting of a more diverse pool of contestants — that way one can be the Bachelor or the Bachelorette. Oddly enough, she did confirm that she watches UnREAL and finds the cast very intriguing.

Is that something you’d want to see, readers?
