Bryan was in the lead at the midget race before hitting the wall and being struck by an oncoming vehicle, according to a report by Racer.com. His car flipped multiple times on the track. It took emergency crews around a half hour to get him out of his car before he was taken to a hospital in Lincoln, Nebraska.
His family released a statement after the devastating crash on Bryan’s official Facebook page:
“Bryan was severely injured last night while competing in the Belleville Nationals midget race at Belleville High Banks in Kansas. Bryan was airlifted to Bryan Medical Center West in Lincoln, Nebraska following the accident, where he remains in critical condition and under the care of the medical staff. We appreciate the support of the racing community and are thankful for the outreach we’ve received. We ask that you continue to respect our privacy as we focus on Bryan.”
Just one day before the tragic accident, Bryan got into another bad crash at the Aug. 5 preliminary race. He got out of that accident unscathed and tweeted his thanks to the makers of his safety equipment and chassis manufacturer for keeping him safe.
After the crash, he also tweeted: “Took a tough hit last night, but the guys have me another hot rod ready for tonight’s Belleville Midget Nationals!”
Before his accident, Bryan had competed in the Indy 500 three times. He finished 23rd in the May 2016 race. He won an Aug. 3 midget race in Beloit, Kansas, in his 27th victory of the year.
