Gabby Douglas Shockingly Eliminated — Can’t Defend All-Around Title At Rio Olympics 2016

Say it isn’t so! Reigning women’s all-around champion Gabby Douglas officially didn’t make the cut in the 2016 Rio Olympics, meaning that she won’t get a chance to defend her title. Get the shocking details right here!

There wasn’t much more Gabby Douglas could’ve done to try earning her chance at another all-around gold. The 20-year-old put on a fabulous performance, earning a score of 60.131 (the third best score of all countries competing), but still won’t be seeing the Aug. 11 finals in Rio. Why is that?

Well, Gabby was edged by her very own teammates, Simone Biles and Aly Raisman — and only two athletes from each country are allowed in the finals. Can you say heartbreaking?!

As if the being eliminated wasn’t already difficult to bear, Gabby’s score was just less than half a point off from Aly’s score of 60.607. She and Aly were also neck-and-neck in the qualifiers for the 2012 London Games when Gabby took home the gold, but the “two-country rule” didn’t apply then because no other Americans had qualified.

Despite the tough outcome, though, Gabby said she had “no regrets” about how she performed in the qualifiers, Frankly, it just meant a lot to her to even be back at the Olympics!

“I wanted to go back and defend my title,” she said in a post-qualifier interview. “But this has been an amazing journey.”

The US Women’s Gymnastics Team have proven to be one of the closest teams competing in this year’s Olympics, with Gabby, Aly, Simone, and Madison Kocian all taking to social media to show just how much fun they’re having together. See what we mean?

No wonder Gabby took her elimination so well — she’s probably super happy for her teammates! And considering the “Fab Five” qualified for the team all-around finals with a can’t-be-touched score of 185.238, it seems Gabby could be on her way to another gold medal anyway. No sweat, huh Gabby?

Folks, are you bummed Gabby didn’t make the all-around finals? Do you think Simone or Aly will take home the gold? Tell us below!
