Pokemon GO: NY Sex Offenders Banned From Downloading & Using New App

Everybody loves playing Pokemon Go, but the state of New York is making sure convicted sex offenders won’t be able to use the super popular app. Keep reading for the shocking reason why they want to keep the game away from those who pose a threat to children!

“Protecting New York’s children is priority number one and, as technology evolves, we must ensure these advances don’t become new avenues for dangerous predators to prey on new victims,”

Governor Andrew Cuomo said in a statement Aug. 1. “These actions will provide safeguards for the players of these augmented reality games and help take one more tool away from those seeking to do harm to our children.”

He took the dramatic action after some state senators released a report that showed that kids playing the game have, “unknowingly been steered to locations in close proximity to, or even at, sex offender residences.” Yikes! That’s a terrifying thought that children are looking for Pokemon that are at the homes of people who have been convicted of doing harm to kids and teens!

There’s going to be a new parole condition for sex offenders that are under community supervision that, “will prohibit them from downloading, accessing, or otherwise engaging in any Internet enabled gaming activities, including Pokémon GO.” Gov. Cuomo also said that the state will be working with Niantic, Inc. — the company that made the Pokemon Go app — to give them current and up to date info of people on their sex offender registry list.

Wow, they’re really serious about keeping Pokemon Go out of the hands of bad guys.

Pokemon Go took the world by storm ever since it became available on July 16, and is super popular among kids and teens. But by going out into the real world looking to collect Pokemon the game has sent them to locations including strip clubs, police stations, a Black Lives Matter protest that had riot police present, tons of churches and many private home locations.

Folks, do you think New York is doing the right thing in banning sex offenders from being able to use Pokemon Go?
