The USA women’s soccer team didn’t have the best showing in their Group G matchup against Colombia, but still managed to win the group and move on to the quarterfinals. The girls will likely be using the disappointment from Aug. 9’s error-filled 2-2 draw to not let themselves get that close to losing again — especially because they want to keep their gold-winning streak alive! Despite the nail biter that the U.S. women’s team had to get to the quarterfinals, they’re definitely favored in this match against Sweden. In fact, Sweden has only had one win so far in the Olympic tournament, scoring just two goals in three games and losing to Brazil 5-1. But there’s a slight catch with this match-up: Sweden now has the former U.S. women’s coach.
Yep, the girls will be facing Pia Sundhage, the woman who used to run the show for their team as coach from 2008 to 2012, helping the team win two of their four consecutive gold medals. Pia is very aware of how hard the U.S. women’s team is going to play, so this may increase the competition to a higher level than there appears to be. Then again, the team is likely going to want to impress their former coach, so playing against Pia’s new team might be beneficial to them!
If the girls do pull off a win — easily or not — the next match up is guaranteed to be a tough one. The winner of this game advances to the semifinal to play Brazil or Australia, which would be the ultimate testing point for Team USA in the hunt for another gold medal.
