Venus & Serena Williams Suffer First-Ever Olympics Doubles Loss On National Sisters Day

What an ironic day to lose! Venus and Serena Williams endured their first-ever Olympic doubles loss on Aug. 7, which happens to also be National Sisters Day. Get the shocking details right here!

Who would’ve ever thought the Rio Olympics would be so short-lived for the Williams sisters?!

When Serena Williams and Venus Williams took on Czech Republic’s Lucie Safarova and Barbora Strycova in Round 1 of Women’s Doubles on Aug. 7, they were left completely stunned. The three-time gold medalists weren’t just knocked out in the first round — they were completely shut out!

Yep, after completely dominating the competition in three Summer Olympics (Sydney 2000 Games, Beijing 2008 Games and London 2012 Games), Venus and Serena lost 2-0 in straight sets to Lucie and Barbora. The sisters started out letting key points get away from them, losing 6-3 in the first set.

They caught a brief lead in the second set, going almost point-for-point until their opponents took the momentum from them and ended up winning 6-4. Clearly National Sisters Day didn’t give Serena and Venus the good karma they needed, huh?

It’s been a tough weekend for Venus, as she suffered a loss of her own in a singles match against Belgian Kirsten Flipkens just one day before her doubles upset with Serena. Venus’ management cited illness for her not-so-hot performance in the singles, so that certainly could’ve played into her doubles loss not even 24 hours later. But after going 3-0 in the last three Olympics they’ve played, surely the loss wasn’t easy for Venus and Serena to endure no matter how Venus was feeling!

Fortunately for the Williams sisters, not all hope is lost. Serena is continuing on in the Rio Olympics, as she won her singles match against Australia’s Daria Gavrilova just before the doubles loss. And besides, Venus and Serena just won their sixth Wimbledon doubles title in July, so they’re obviously still two of tennis’ best — just no longer undefeated!

Readers, are you shocked Venus and Serena have already been eliminated? Did you think they’d win their fourth gold medals? Tell us below!
