Jose Fernandez: Cardinals Shortshop Aledmys Diaz Mourns His Lifelong Friend: This Is Painful

In the wake of Jose Fernandez’s tragic passing, his fellow baseball stars are grieving the loss of their friend and talented pitcher. St. Louis Cardinals Shortstop Aledmys Diaz, however, grew up with Jose, and the devastating Sept. 25 news hit him harder than most.

Though Aledmys Diaz, 26, is too distraught to talk to media about the loss of his friend and teammate Jose Fernandez, Cardinals backup catcher Brayan Pena said that Diaz was hit extremely hard by the awful news. “He’s not taking it well,” Pena said in an official statement. “This is a guy who grew up with him. They spent so much time together during their youth and stuff like that.” So heartbreaking.

Pena added that Fernandez’s passing has, naturally, a huge impact on the Cuban community. “This is something very painful because for Cuban players, he really meant a lot to us. Our community is very small, and for him to dedicate his life and the stuff he did off the field for my community down there in Miami, that says a lot about his character and the type of person he was off the field,” Pena explained. “It’s a tough moment for all of us, but especially for Diaz because of the magnitude of the relationship they had.” Our hearts go out to him and the rest of the team.

Pena and Diaz last hung out in July 2016, when the Cardinals traveled to Miami. Fernandez played for the Miami Marlins from 2013 through 2016 before he was tragically killed in a boating accident off Miami Beach.
