Jose Fernandez’s Marlins Teammates Leave Hats On Mound After Epic Win — Watch

Jose Fernandez’s Miami Marlins teammates left their hats on the pitcher’s mound to honor Jose after their Sept. 26 win against the New York Mets. This was their first game after Jose’s tragic death and one they’ll never forget. Click to WATCH.

The Miami Marlins team, all wearing No. 16 jerseys in honor of Jose, managed to beat the New York Mets 7-3 just one day after their beloved pitcher died in a boating accident on Sept. 25. After the incredible win, the team went out to the pitcher’s mound and placed their hats on top of it to remember Jose and what he meant to the team.

The Miami Marlins ended the game where they started it — at the pitcher’s mound. The team huddled around the pitcher’s mound before and after the game. Miami Marlins player Giancarlo Stanton, 26, spoke to the team. In an emotional pre-game speech, Giancarlo told the team, “We’ll all come together and help each other out,” according to USA Today. “We’re going to do this somehow. Just put your hand on somebody if somebody is struggling, pick them up. And we’re going to find a way to do this. I love all you guys.”

And they did find a way to win. For Jose. Dee Gordon, 28, even hit a home run during the game. Jose was such an extraordinary player and had so much potential. He was only 24 years old when he died. HollywoodLife learned EXCLUSIVELY that the Marlins are thinking about retiring Jose’s number. Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria, 75, admitted on Sept. 26 that no one will ever wear No. 16 again.

The Marlins’ Sept. 25 game against the Mets was cancelled due to the announcement of Jose’s death. Jose and two other victims were found dead after their boat crashed in the early hours of Sept. 25. Funeral plans have yet to be announced.
