Shimon Peres Dead: Bill Clinton & More Mourn The Former Israeli President

The world is mourning the loss of one of it’s most influential former leaders, with the passing of former Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres.

The Nobel Peace Prize winner died Sept. 27 at the age of 93, two weeks after suffering a stroke. Now global leaders and Hollywood stars are remembering his amazing legacy.

So devastating! Shimon Peres has sadly passed on and the tributes are rolling in about his remarkable life and achievements. He twice served as Israel’s prime minister and was also the country’s ninth president. In 1993, he historically helped broker a peace accord along with then-President Bill Clinton between Israel’s then-prime minister Yitzhak Rabin and Palestinian Liberation Organization leader Yasser Arafat. In the Oslo accord, the PLO officially recognized the state of Israel, which in turn recognized the PLO as representing the Palestinian people, and both sides agreed to settle their differences by peaceful, non-violent means.

It was such a landmark achievement in Middle Eastern peace and earned Shimon a Nobel Prize.

Shimon was instrumental in his 50 year political career in Israel, helping build the country’s armed forces as a three-time defense minister to one of the most powerful and and efficient armies in the world. He also helped arm the country with nuclear weapons. He was appointed as president by parliament in 2007 for a seven-year term where he frequently clashed with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

He officially retired from politics in 2014, and will always be remembered for how he always wanted to chose the more peaceful option in a time when violence throughout the region continued to escalate.

President Barack Obama wrote a thoughtful and lengthly memorial that can be read here:

Former President Bill Clinton called him an “eloquent friend.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sent his condolences:

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau remembered the remarkable man:

U.S. congressional powerhouses including Sen. Chuck Shumer, Sen. Ted Cruz and Rep. Nancy Pelosi all weighted in on his passing.

Celebs like Larry King, Paula Abdul, songwriter Diane Warren and actress Lynda Carter also shared their sentiments:

Even Apple CEO Tim Cook weighed in on his passing:

Our thoughts are with Shimon’s family, friends and the people of Israel.
