Zendaya Coleman, 20, heartbreakingly claims that she was refused service by a grocery store clerk because of the color of her skin. Zendaya posted a few Snapchat videos on Sept. 6 in order to explain what happened. “So we just got out of this Vons,” Zendaya explained to the camera while sitting next to a friend. “Now I am trying to buy a lot of gift cards. There are certain limits or whatever so you can only by so much. But the lady that was helping us. I don’t think she was a fan of our skin tone.”
“She then threw my wallet,” the singer said, sounding completely shocked. “I can’t make this up! This is what we deal with! She literally threw my wallet and she was like ‘You can’t afford this.’ It was $400! Long story short. There is so much progress to be done in our world.” How disturbing!
But Zendaya did back track, later saying the clerk may not have actually thrown the wallet. “It wasn’t like a throw it was like a toss with my cards still loose…my card fell on the scanner and she began helping other customers. You know what, it’s all love!” But lucky for Zendaya and her friend, all was well in the end, as they did get the assistance they deserved. “Yo shout out the manager for coming and helping – I got my gift cards!” It’s just a shame they had to deal with that situation at all.
Zendaya has previously been in the middle of a race-based controversy. Back in 2015, when she was just a teenager, she was attacked by the Fashion Police host Giuliana Rancic for choosing to wear her hair in dreadlocks to the Oscars. ”I feel like she smells like patchouli oil, or maybe weed,” Giuliana said. Zendaya then slammed her on Twitter, accusing her of being “ignorant, disrespectful and outrageously offensive.” It looks like this girl knows how to stand up for herself!
