Hurricane Matthew Heads To Florida & Carolinas: Do You Need To Evacuate ASAP?

People of the Atlantic coast are preparing for Hurricane Matthew to hit the coast HARD in the next few days, with some cities needing to evacuate as soon as possible. Will you need to leave your hometown? Find out right here!

Officials have given several warnings to the people of the Southeast as Hurricane Matthew has made it’s way to the U.S. coastline, with the governors of Florida and South Carolina urging their residents to evacuate in the coastal areas.

The storm is expected to strengthen to a Category 4 hurricane including 145 mph winds and some intense rainfall over the next few days. Because of the likelihood of such a powerful impact, the National Hurricane Center warned that there is life-threatening flooding possible on Oct. 6 and 7 along the Florida and Georgia coasts.

As of 5 a.m. ET on Oct. 6, the eye of the storm had reached within 255 miles of West Palm Beach, Florida, but it’s still not quite clear what part of the Southeast coast will get hit the hardest. Florida Gov. Rick Scott doesn’t want to take any chances, though, and is urging residents living on the coast (from Miami to Jacksonville) to evacuate. In fact, Gov. As for north of Florida, Hurricane Matthew doesn’t seem to be as serious (yet), but that doesn’t mean they aren’t taking precaution. South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley ordered coastal residents in and around Charleston and Beaufort to evacuate by 3 p.m. ET on Oct. 5. Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal has also issued a State of Emergency for 13 counties in the state.

Considering this storm has already taken 16 lives in the Caribbean, including 10 in Haiti, there’s clearly no toying with your luck on this one. Although it seems no other states have been urged to evacuate just yet, Hurricane Matthew is definitely something for East Coast residents to keep an eye on.
