Too funny! Jimmy Fallon, 42, had some good laughs alongside Chicago Cubs stars Anthony Rizzo, 27, Dexter Fowler, 30, and World Series MVP Ben Zobrist, 35, as they followed up their epic Nov. 5 Saturday Night Live appearance by sitting down to chat with him about their amazing victory. The guys got a huge standing ovation as they brought out the championship trophy and Jimmy completely fangirled all over them.
“It was the best baseball game, I wish you could have seen it,” Jimmy joked with the guys, who noted they were too busy working during the epic game seven that gave them the championship. Since baseball players are notoriously superstitious, he asked them if they followed certain rituals to make sure they made it through each game of the playoffs. Ben said “Definitely don’t change seats on the bench. everybody stays the same,” to which Dexter totally agreed. Anthony revealed that “I broke my phone during the NCLS and didn’t get it fixed,” because he was afraid it would jinx his team’s chances! Going without a phone for weeks to not hurt the team’s victorious run? Now that’s commitment!
As for their massive victory parade where five million fans lined the streets of Chicago Nov. 4, Ben commented on how crazy it was. “There were people hanging out of trees and buildings,” he said while Anthony described it as, “The best feeling in the world. That parade seeing everyone, people crying, being silent cause they were in awe, it was amazing.” How sweet, such hometown love!
Jimmy even brought up the rumor that they were going to have Steve Bartman — the fan that jumped out and interrupted play during game six of their 2003 NCLS run, costing the team the pennant — in to open their 2017 season by throwing out the opening pitch. That was such a heartbreaking moment and a reminder of how cursed the Cubs have been — until now!
Anthony hadn’t heard about it but thought that would be a brilliant idea, while Dexter added, “It would only be right if Moises Alou would catch the ball,” referring to how Steve reached out and grabbed it before the outfielder could make the legal catch. It’s so fun to watch the guys kick back and enjoy their championship glory in hilarious ways like their SNL appearance and now on The Tonight Show.
