We can’t get over Ellen DeGeneres, 58, and her sweet, tearful reaction to receiving the Medal of Freedom.
“In a career spanning three decades, Ellen DeGeneres has lifted our spirits and brought joy to our lives as a standup comic, actor and television star,” the announcer said as President Obama placed the medal around The Ellen Show star’s neck. “In every role, she reminds us to be kind to one another and to treat people as each of us wants to be treated. At a pivotal moment, her courage and candor helped change the hearts and minds of millions of Americans, accelerating our nation’s constant drive towards equality and acceptance for all. Again and again, Ellen DeGeneres has shown us that a single individual can make the world a more fun, more open, more loving place so long as we just keep swimming.”
Well, can you blame Ellen for breaking down in tears?
Many other celebs were also honored at the White House today. Tom Hanks, Robert De Niro, Cicely Tyson, Robert Redford, Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels, Diana Ross, Bruce Springsteen, Michael Jordan, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Vin Scully all received a Medal of Freedom for how they “helped push America forward, inspiring millions of people around the world along the way”, as Obama said in an official statement.
