Kim Mathers (who also goes by the last name Scott) has a lot to be thankful for this year.
On Oct. 7, 2015, Eminem’s ex-wife tried to kill herself by getting drunk, taking pills, and ramming her Cadillac Escalade into a pole in Macomb Township, Mich. Though her SUV flipped over, she survived, and on Tuesday, she received her sentence, which consisted of one year of probation and a $900 fine. She also had to agree to random drug and alcohol testing. The good news for Mathers — besides the fact that her suicide attempt failed — was that she avoided jail time.
She had already pleaded no contest to a reduced misdemeanor count of impaired driving in connection to the crash. She had also readily admitted that the crash was intentional. “I never expected to make it out alive,” she explained to Detroit’s Channel 995 radio show Mojo in the Morning. She then noted that she had “been clean for 10 years.” In other words, this was a pretty swift and alarming backslide, especially considering she admitted to drinking a fifth of Malibu rum before getting behind the wheel. “I sat at the end of a road, where I knew that no one else but myself would get hurt,” she continued. “I drank, yes, I took pills, and I hit the gas and aimed for a pole.”
During her court appearance, Mathers left most of the talking to her attorney but did take a moment to share just how much she regretted the choices she had made last fall, noting that she now realized her actions had put other people in danger (even though she had previously stated she “knew” no one else could be injured).
“I am really, truly, deeply sorry for my actions that day,” she began. “They were selfish. They were destructive. I didn’t take into consideration anybody else’s safety and the feelings of my family, and I am truly sorry.”
Additionally, her attorney, Michael Smith, insisted the crash had a “profound” effect on Mathers, who has been receiving counseling and has reportedly been sober since the incident. “Her life has been a fishbowl,” Smith said. “It’s been magnified with anything she does because of who she was married to. It’s unfair, but she understands it, and that goes with the territory.”
Mathers first met Eminem in 1989 and married him in 1999. They divorced in 2001 but remarried in 2006 for roughly four months before divorcing again. They have one daughter together, Hailie, who is now 20.
