In 2015, close to 50,000 runners finished the race, which is amazing considering how long it is. This year’s track starts off in Staten Island, leading the racers over the Verrazano Bridge into beautiful Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. From there, the runners basically follow the R-train on the NYC Subway system, running up the west side of BK until they cross over the Pulaski Bridge into Queens.

They then make their way over the East River into the Queensboro Bridge into Manhattan. First Ave is filled to the brim with runners heading north into The Bronx, before they pull a U-Turn to head down Fifth Ave before finishing the race in Central Park. Finishing such a hike is a huge victory, and this year’s race will see 300 disabled runners, including more than 30 veterans, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The 2015 race was won by a pair of Kenyans, as Stanley Biwott, 30, edged out his fellow countryman, Geoffrey Kipsang, 23, by just 14 seconds to win the race for the men. That’s amazing, but not as incredible as what Mary Keitany, 34, pulled off. Not only did she go back-to-back, winning her second consecutive New York City marathon in 2015, she was a full 1:06 ahead of second place, Aselefech Mergia, 31, of Ethiopia.

Mary will be back for the 2016 race and if she wins again, she’ll be the first woman to threepeat since Greta Waitz pulled off the feat 30 years ago, according to FloTrack. Mary’s the heavy favorite, but keep an eye on Molly Huddle, 32, and Gwen Jorgensen, 30, to possibly challenge Mary for the title.
