Casey Affleck took home one of the biggest prizes of the night at the 2017 Oscars — Best Actor — but the criticism was fast and furious due to the sexual harassment allegations made against him in 2010.
Now, Casey has responded to the controversy in a Feb. 28 interview. See what he had to say here.
“I believe that any kind of mistreatment of anyone for any reason is unacceptable and abhorrent, and everyone deserves to be treated with respect in the workplace and anywhere else,” Casey Affleck, 41, reiterated to the Boston Globe on Feb. 28 after his Oscars win, apparently “sighing heavily” when asked about the situation.
He also pointed out that people commenting on social media don’t know exactly what happened.
We previously knew that Casey denied the sexual harassment allegations made against him in 2010 by two women who worked with him (both sides are not allowed to publicly comment), but amidst his big Academy Awards win, the backlash has risen again.

“There’s really nothing I can do about it,” the Manchester by the Sea star added “wearily”, according to the outlet. “Other than live my life the way I know I live it and to speak to what my own values are and how I try to live by them all the time.”
Though the suit was settled out of court, many people — including celebrities — feel that the Academy voters didn’t take the controversy into account, and consider Casey’s win to be undeserved. “Can we check Best Actor again?” B.J. Novak tweeted on Feb. 27. “Boys! BUY ur way out of trouble by settling out of court!Just do a good acting job, thats all that matters!bc Art isn’t about humanity, right?”
Constance Wu echoed. Obviously, not everyone is happy about the Academy’s choice of winner.
