The Sony Pictures presentation at CinemaCon 2017 took place at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, Nevada on Monday, March 27. With the help of some A-list talent — including Ryan Gosling, Jon Hamm and Dwayne Johnson — the studio gave insiders an exciting sneak peek into what’s to come. For starters, the first trailer for Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle was revealed, as well as the premiere trailers for Bladerunner 2049, The Dark Tower and more!
But first, Baby Driver! Director Edgar Wright as well as stars Ansel Elgort and Jon Hamm kicked off Sony’s presentation with an intense and lengthy scene from the film. Plus, it was announced that Baby Driver has been pushed up to June 28th release!
Edgar shared that there were no CGI or green screens used to film the high-action getaway car chases, though sadly Ansel admitted he was not always the one behind the wheel. However, Ansel did tell the crowd: “I learned how to do a lot of the stunts myself and I’m kind of addicted to it now.”
Jon added,” It was a thrill to make. It was a lot of hard work and one really awful haircut. I was very proud to be a part of it. Everything we shot is real and it’s all up there.”
As for The Dark Tower, no cast was present but actor Idris Elba announced the trailer in pre-taped video. The trailer was action-packed and a total thrill ride from start to finish, proving that Idris is most definitely Hollywood’s next big action star. Plus, Matthew McConaughey makes for a terrifying and mysterious villain.
Sony also treated us to a glimpse at the live-action Peter Rabbit film that is currently being made. It was a rough edit, but brief audio of James Corden as the fairytale bunny we all know and love revealed a really exciting take on the story originally told by children’s books.
We saw previews from a few different, random movies after Peter Rabbit. There is a movie called The Star which tells the tale of the nativity scene (aka the night Jesus was born) from the POV of animals. Little is known about the film, except that Oprah Winfrey, Tyler Perry and Zachary Levi are just a handful of the actors who will voice some of the characters.
Bladerunner 2049‘s first look was one of the biggest surprises of the night, especially when Ryan Gosling came out onto the stage. Sony’s Tom Rothman shared that the new chapter “expands the mythology” and “continues the story in pretty astounding ways,” then the trailer was revealed. Ryan could hardly contain his excitement while talking about the film, saying: “It was so surreal to be walking around in the universe of ‘Bladerunner’.
The craftsmanship of this film was on another level.” As for whether or not Ryan was familiar with the original film, it was revealed that he was only two years old when it came out — but he eventually saw it as a teenager. “I saw everything that stole from it first. I think I was 13 or 14 when I saw it for the first time. I was just blown away by how influential this film was,” he shared.
Tom Holland is yet another young star who grace the CinemaCon stage, there to reveal a new trailer for the highly anticipated reboot of Spider-Man: Homecoming. The trailer showed us a really wonderful dynamic between Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) and Tom’s Peter Parker, who really is just an average every day teenager in the film. Plus, Michael Keaton makes the perfect villain.

Other random trailers we saw were the Shay Mitchell starring Cadaver, which will haunt you. We finally saw Taraji P. Henson as Proud Mary, which looks like it will be a total blast. Last but not least was the trailer for Flatliners, which starts out as a pretty cool sci-fi film but turns into a psychological thriller. That one has an all-star cast of young talent, including Ellen Page, Will Estes and Nina Dobrev.
Last but certainly not least, Sony closed the opening night event by bringing out Dwayne Johnson to premiere the first trailer for Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. Of course he wasn’t alone, as co-stars Nick Jonas, Karen Gillan and Jack Black were also on-hand. Before the trailer, Jack joked he and Nick were working on a title song for the film, and then the comedian broke out into impromptu lyrics about Jumanji and it’s jungle. Too funny!
Dwayne told the audience he wanted to pay homage to the original with the second, and that he was hoping to make the story something that had evolved. He also shared a truly touching story about the moment he met Robin Williams — star of the original Jumanji — years ago at a previous CinemaCon. It was very clear he was just hoping to make something that Robin would appreciate, and by the looks of the trailer he did just that.
However, making the movie came at a cost. Jack shared that filming in Hawaii was “pure hell”, claiming that Leonardo DiCaprio braving the “ice cold tundra” for The Revenant was really nothing compared to what they endured.
