Welcome back to Oakland, Matt Barnes. After Kevin Durant suffered a terrifying knee injury during the Golden State Warriors’ game on Feb. 28, the Dubs wasted no time in finding his replacement.
They called up Matt and now, he’s back on the team!
“It’s a dream come true,” Matt Barnes, 36, told The Undefeated’s Marc J. Spears, celebrating his return to the Golden State Warriors, according to ESPN. Matt’s set to fill-in for Kevin Durant, 28, who hyperextended his knee during the Dubs’ game with the Washington Wizards on Feb. 28.
“I feel like I helped start something in [2007 and now, I’m coming back to help finish it,” Matt said. The NBA journeyman has played with nine teams during his 13-season career, including the Warriors. Matt was with the Dubs from 2006-08, helping taking down the white-hot Dallas Mavericks in the 2007 playoffs.
Matt also celebrated on Instagram, posting an old picture of himself along with former-teammates Baron Davis, 37, and Stephen Jackson, 38. “Wish I could bring you two with me!! I’m at a loss for words right now, next to the birth of my children this is the happiest day of my life!! Coming back to where it all started!”
His celebration may be a little premature, as KD’s status was still up in the air. After the game, the team was still evaluating MRI results. They’re expected to announce the severity of the injury on March 1. However, Matt said the Dubs signed him to an “end of the season” contract and not a 10-day-deal, indicating the Dubs expect KD to be on the shelf for some time.
Matt was let go from the Sacramento Kings as part of the massive DeMarcus Cousins, 26, deal. Prior to that, Matt was in the news for allegedly choking a woman during a fight in a NYC nightclub. Matt denied the allegations, saying that “don’t believe everything you read.” Well, you can believe that he’s headed back to Oakland.
What do you think about Matt going back to Oakland? Do you think that KD’s injury will be that bad?
